I think ill be making Eric a vet appointment. I just went up to check on him, and he's lost tonnes of weight, and his teeth look uneven all of a sudden. So I think ill have to spend the remainder of my birthday money on him. Quick question though, how can I keep him warm on the trip to the vets? Ill probably have to walk and right now it's 0 degrees outside. Unless I can catch a lift off of a family member or something, the vets are only just up the road from me, so it's not a long walk, but still a cold one.
I'm super worried about him, I cleaned him out yesterday and noticed he had a bit of diarrhoea in his toilet corner, but the rest of his stools seemed normal and I haven't noticed any today. I'm dreading taking him, because today marks one year I had my hammy honey PTS by my vet, the same dog who also put my dog to sleep 3 months before that. So the vets isn't my favourite place to go when I have to. tongue
I'm dreading it. I'm also hoping for a vet bill I'm able to pay. I'm out of work at the minute and struggling :/ but ill find a way. It's something that has to be done.
Wish us luck. <3

Oh dear, sorry to hear this. Do you have a hamster carry case? if not, do you have a hamster ball? I would stuff either of those with plenty of bedding/tissue and he should be fine on the walk to the vets. As long as he has plenty of material to nest in he should be ok, you could also put the ball/carrier in a paper bag (not plastic, as ventilation would be poor), and that was he would be sheltered from any wind.

If you are not working at the moment, do let the vets know and they may be able to help. I am sure my local vets can do reduced fees/payment plans. But as it is a 'small furry' bills are considerably less than cats and dogs anyway. For a consultation and baytril, with some critical care feed (may prescribe if he has lost weight), you would be looking at £25 I would guess. I would suggest a tooth trim as well, if he has poorly teeth and can't eat, that could explain the weight loss.

Do let us know how you get on, good luck!

Ah thanks! I can afford £25 but ill let them know I'm not working. Just want to get him checked over properly too. Might put my mind at ease.
Yep I've got a carrier ill put him in that. smile
Ill let everyone know how he gets on, ill make him an appointment ASAP. :-)

Good luck Hannah. Eric is a cutie pie - he may have cut his tooth on over-exuberant bar chewing or something... the critical care is good stuff.
If they give some to you then feed it with water (you make a paste out of it with warm water) and i used wholewheat pasta I found in the pound shop, with brocolli as a sort of pesto hammy friendly pasta dish! My lot wolf it down.

If his teeth are uneven they may be hurting him so it would explain why he's not eating.
Also, you might get some baby food while you're out if the vet thinks it may help or porridge made with Beaphar Kitty milk is splendid stuff- got Jakey back to fighting weight and winning a cup at the Highworth Hammy show.

Thinking of you both. xx

Sorry to hear about Eric! Hope he's ok! When i go to the vets i put them in a carrier with oodles of bedding and then put the carrier in a plastic storage tub with loads of towels around the carrier to keep the lil'un warm. smile

Ooooo good idea on the pasta thing. Ill give that a go if the vet gives me anything.
It's so hard watching him toddle around, all frail and old when I first rescued him he was so lively and full of it. He did seem to have a new lease of life when I put some chinchilla sand into his box yesterday. He loves scratching and rolling around in it.
I'm curious to see how he'll handle being handled also. I trust him almost 100% with me. I've held him before and no bites, but he has bitten my sister and my friend.
I must just be his favourite. tongue
Thanks ILH xx

Thanks Silent_Tears smile will let everyone know.
Not only is it now freezing cold, but raining heavily too. It hasn't rained for days.. This is some sort of omen, I'm sure of it. LOL Flag I don't think I'm prepared to walk up to the vets in the rain an the cold with a hamster that's already not in top condition.. :/ the poor bugger is going to come back even more sick than I took him up for! Unsure

Just got back from the vets! She was useless in so many ways.
The first thing she asked was "does he turn round and bite?" And I said no he's just a bit nervous. I then pet him in his carry box no problem. She went to swoop down and grab him and he turned round and jumped nervously, so she jumped back, clearly scared. She then got a flannel and pinned him down, still couldn't get a good look as he was wriggling and screeching.
In the end she put him under anaesthetic and trimmed his teeth, top and bottom then. His bottom gum was inflamed so she gave him a pain killer and anti inflammatory. So he's alright. She also gave me some vitamin supplement stuff for him, which ill leave in his water for him.
All of that came to £50. I almost died on the floor. The things we do for our animals. LOL Flag
But she was terrified of him, you could tell. My poor baby. sad
